“Among the Hemlocks led me to two proud moments of my filmmaking career: my first television broadcast credit, and the first time I ever saw my name in credits on the big screen. Looking up at the big screen in Regal Cinemas and seeing my name – it was like watching my dreams come true right before my very eyes. I know that my work with Among The Hemlocks is just the beginning of a bright future in the industry. Many many thanks to Roslin Smith, who I stayed up with past 3 AM crafting a shot with while you were battling cancer. Your work ethic continues to inspire me.”

“Creating this production team was a privilege in and of itself. I got to work with the most talented people I went to school with. I had the unique opportunity of pursuing both of my passions in this project: acting and filmmaking. My team and I worked extremely hard on making this piece a reality. And what we created speaks for itself. I could not be more proud of this piece. The things we did together in a mere 50 hours! A special thank you my team, geo-9, and the Fredonia Film Department for lending us equipment.”

“The proudest moment of my college career was making this film. I discovered my passion for post-production when I edited this film, and now it’s my favorite part of filmmaking. The film has been screened at the Film and Her Film Festival, submitted and accepted due to my editing work, and at the Fredonia Film Festival. I’m elated that something we created for our final capstone led us to these brilliant opportunities. A special thank you to the Fredonia Film department!”

We had a team of 6 editors working on the film, myself included. I was brought in after the project began their post-production as they needed extra help, and I was shouldered with a difficult task – organize the workflow so that 5 other people can edit different parts of the film. Not to mention, I became responsible for rough cutting a lot of the scenes, as the project was behind schedule when I first was signed on. Editors are fully aware of what’s it like to have sleepless nights on the job, and I had my fair share of them with this project. Luckily, I was known in university for having an immaculate editing workflow, and my organization of footage and audio was so clear and easy to understand, that I didn’t have to verbally explain how to navigate the footage or timelines to anyone on the team. I later received direct praise from the director for making the film a more cohesive unit for the editors, and we submitted the film on time.

“This project made me fall in love with assistant editing – what many people refer to as “the grunt work.” Combing through, storing, and backing up hours of footage for a half an hour film may not seem enjoyable to most, but there’s something I love about it – the meditative groove you fall into, the joy of organization, and knowing you’re streamlining the editing process for the rough and fine cutters. I appreciate every part of filmmaking, even the more tedious parts, because when you put a lot of work and time into your piece – you’re all the more proud of its outcome. I now consider myself as someone with immense strength in assistant editing, and I put it down on my film résumé as one of my special skills.

“This was the first film I ever created. I’ve come so far since then! I even debated if it belonged on my website due to its low quality. I had no training at all at the time. But I’m so proud to be able to say that the first film I ever made won an award – Best Film for NYSSSA’s Application Film Festival, and later screened at Squeaky Wheel. This video made me believe in my future as a filmmaker – and launched me into my filmmaking career. A special thank you to my actress Erika Fuentes. You were the perfect choice for this film. I’m so proud of this short, even now.”
